Dental nurse who travelled 6495 miles to study at Dundee
The University of Dundee has welcomed one of its newest students, Michelle Green, a resident of the remote island Tristan Da Cunha. Michelle will eventually be Tristan’s onsite dental nurse and has come to the University to improve her skills. She said, “I was really nervous and scared about making the trip to Dundee, it’s a lot bigger than what I’m used to. “I’m here to learn everything I can about dental work, from children to dentures. University gets active for transgender students
Students from the University of Dundee’s LGBT+ Society have teamed up with The Institute of Sport and Exercise (ISE) to pilot a new project, which will allow trans and gender non-conforming students supported access to the gym and sports teams. Recent estimates suggest that 1 in 200 people identify with being trans and gender non-conforming. Those who align with this can suffer dysphoria and risk of harassment, a barrier when accessing clearly gendered facilities including sporting services. Award for ‘outstanding’ research
Scientists from the University of Dundee have written one of the five most outstanding research papers of the past year, according to a prestigious academic journal. An international study led by Professor Chim Lang and Dr Graham Rena at Dundee’s Division of Molecular and Clinical Medicine showed how Metformin, the world’s most commonly used Type 2 diabetes drug, may be ‘repurposed’ to treat non-diabetic conditions. University to honour outstanding alumni at Winter Graduation
The University of Dundee will honour three of our outstanding alumni at this year’s Winter Graduation ceremonies on November 17th and 18th. Children’s author Pamela Butchart, leading lawyer Joyce Cullen and Dr Niall Elliott, Team GB’s Chief Medical Officer for the Olympics, will all be given honorary degrees at the ceremonies in Caird Hall in Dundee, alongside hundreds of new graduates. Professor Sue Black receives her Damehood
Professor Sue Black, one of the world’s foremost experts in forensic anthropology, today received her Damehood from HM The Queen in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Professor Black was named in The Queen’s 90th birthday Honours earlier this year. She is Director of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID) and co-Director of the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science, based at the University of Dundee.
