‘Cellular mosh pit’ helps researchers understand tissue formation
Researchers led by the University of Dundee have developed a way of exploring a ‘cellular mosh pit’ that may shed light on processes such as embryo development, wound healing and cancer growth. Working with colleagues at the University of Aberdeen, they have developed the Active Vertex Model (AVM), a new computational model that allows scientists to examine in greater depth than ever before how cells move in a variety of biological processes. Epithelial tissues, such as the skin or lining of the internal organs, act as barriers to the environment. To form an effective barrier, cells in epithe...

World Asteroid Day finds University researchers working to save the planet
World Asteroid Day today (June 30) finds researchers at the University of Dundee continuing work to protect the Earth from potential future impacts. Asteroid Day marks the anniversary of the largest recent asteroid impact on Earth, in Siberia in 1908. It is a global awareness campaign to promote learning about asteroids and the hazards of future asteroid impacts on Earth. Scientists in the University’s School of Science and Engineering have developed PANGU (Planet and Asteroid Natural scene Generation Utility), a piece of software which generates images of asteroids, planetary surfaces and other sm...
