Tower of tablet brings £68,000 to cancer research
A tower of homemade tablet, more than twice the height of the world’s tallest building, has helped a Dundee woman raise nearly £70,000 for breast cancer research at the University of Dundee. Fiona Edwards has been selling her homemade tablet at running events and through friends and family around Tayside and Fife since 2003 to support researchers at the University. In 2017, she raised over £8,500, bringing her total to more than £68,000. If stacked on top of each other the 15mm high bars would reach a staggering 1,930 metres (6332 feet), dwarfing the Burj Khalifa, currently the ta...

A biological solution to carbon capture and recycling?
E.coli bacteria shown to be excellent at CO2 conversion Scientists at the University of Dundee have discovered that E. coli bacteria could hold the key to an efficient method of capturing and storing or recycling carbon dioxide. Cutting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to slow down and even reverse global warming has been posited as humankind’s greatest challenge. It is a goal that is subject to considerable political and societal hurdles, but it also remains a technological challenge. New ways of capturing and storing CO2 will be needed. Now, normally harmless gut bacteria have been shown to ha...

Discovery Days 2018
Preventing cancer by eating broccoli, treating common skin conditions with sunlight and how to keep secrets in a digital age – just some of the topics up for discussion at the University of Dundee’s Discovery Days next month. Discovery Days 2018 takes place on Thursday 11 January and Friday 12 January at the University’s Dalhousie Building. 15 newly appointed Professors will each talk for 15 minutes about their area of research, as will award-winning teachers and students who have come up with innovative solutions for tackling inequalities in health and wellbeing. The short presentation...
