Dundee Literary Festival from cradle to grave: on pregnancy, mental health, death and more
Books exploring our physical and mental wellbeing, birth and death, will be part of this year’s Dundee Literary Festival, which takes place this week. Local author Tina McGuff will be talking about her life-or-death struggle with anorexia at the Bonar Hall on Thursday, 20th October at 12pm. She will be revealing more about her memoir Seconds to Snap, an extraordinary tale of a girl at war with herself. ‘Orchard City’ to be celebrated
The University of Dundee Botanic Garden will this weekend bring dancers, musicians, storytellers and civic groups together to celebrate the city’s first Community Harvest. The event, which takes place from 11am-3pm on Saturday, 22nd October, will be hosted by Dundee Urban Orchard, an art and horticulture project aiming to raise awareness of food sustainability. Since 2013, it has worked with community groups and cultural organisations to plant 25 orchards across the city. Student returns to campus 80 years after graduating
The University of Dundee welcomed back one of its oldest living graduates when she returned to campus to visit the D’Arcy Thomson Zoology Museum. At 101 years-old, Mrs Anne Walden who was an undergraduate from 1932 to 1936, may well be the University’s oldest living graduate. Mrs Walden’s visit also marked her return to her birthplace. Born and raised on Balfour Street, where student accommodation halls now stand, Anne went on to not only study but also teach at the University. Dundee landmark inspires student to win fashion competition
A University of Dundee student found inspiration from a Dundee landmark to help win a top design competition. Fourth year Textile Design student Julie Mapes has won cashmere company Brora’s annual ‘Wool Week’ competition. She designed a Lambswool jumper which captures the scenic views of an industrialised British landscape, using the image of smoking chimneys set against a colourful horizon using geometric design. Literacy in translation - The Dundee Literary Festival focuses on language.
Language, how it brings people together, and what it might look like in the future will be explored at this year’s Dundee Literary Festival.
