Celebrating Dundee’s flat screen innovators

Their work directly led to the world of flat screens and smartphones we live in today. Now the pioneering work carried out by Professors Walter Spear and Peter LeComber at the University of Dundee in the 1970s and 1980s is to be recognised this week by the US-based Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (IEEE), the largest technical professional organisation in the world. A milestone plaque will be unveiled on Thursday 5 April at the university laboratories where Spear and LeComber carried out their experiments. A University of Dundee graduate is to take on the endurance feat of a lifetime by running an ultra-marathon in the baking heat of the Sahara Desert.Stewart Bell will experience temperatures of up to 50 degrees centigrade as he attempts to run more than 150 miles across shifting sand dunes and white-hot salt plains. His work is familiar to generations of comic buyers and now Scottish artist Cam Kennedy is preparing to share some of the secrets of his craft at a special event hosted by the University of Dundee. Scientists at the University of Dundee have identified the effects of a mutation that gives rise to a form of Intellectual Disability. Intellectual Disability is a type of developmental brain disorder in young patients which to date remains poorly understood and is incurable. Researchers in the School of Life Sciences at Dundee focussed on mutations in the OGT gene, which plays a critical role in protecting brain cells against stress. Contemporary take on city’s history wins awards for Dundee graduate

A University of Dundee graduate has drawn inspiration from the city’s industrial past to claim two awards at one of Scotland’s most prestigious showcases of emerging artistic talent. Rhona Jack will receive £10,000 of funding after being named winner of the Glenfiddich Artist in Residence Award at this year’s Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) New Contemporaries 2018 exhibition.
