Celebrating a legacy of art and design in Dundee
An exhibition marking the 15th anniversary of a fund set up to support some of Scotland’s best young artists and designers will open at the University of Dundee this weekend. Since 2003, a trust fund set up by William Sangster Phillips, son of the well-known Dundee artist Charles Gustav Louis Phillips, has provided more than 40 postgraduate bursaries for the University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. Smoke alarm research leads to prestigious shortlisting
University of Dundee research exploring how a new generation of smoke alarms could help save the lives of children around the world has been shortlisted for a prestigious industry prize. A study by Professor Niamh Nic Daeid, Director of the University’s Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science, and her research student Dave Coss, a fire Investigator and Watch Commander with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, demonstrated that children respond to different smoke alarm tones than adults. Discovery raises possibility of treating neurological disorders
The discovery of a novel class of enzyme in human biology by scientists at the University of Dundee has opened a new area of research that could benefit patients suffering from a range of neurological disorders. These disorders include the acquired neuropathies associated with chemotherapy and diabetes, both of which are on the rise and significantly affect patient quality of life. A leading academic will be discussing the future of social work at this month’s Dundee Arts Café. Dr Trish McCulloch, Social Work Lead at the University of Dundee, will also highlight the issues faced by both staff and service users against a backdrop of austerity on Tuesday 17 April.
