Professor to shed light on how much sun is bad for you

As spring fights with snow to light up Scotland’s sunniest city, the ultra-violet radiation from the sun, as well as manmade sources such as sunbeds, is causing a spike in skin cancer rates across the country. Professor Charlotte Proby, from the University of Dundee, will discuss the hazards (and benefits) of our sun during the next Café Science event, which takes place at Avery & Co on Monday, 9th May. “Light and radiation from our Sun is the basis of life on Earth,” explains Professor Proby. “However, sunlight is a powerful carcinogen that is driving the current skin ...

Using maths to unravel the Sun’s magnetic fields

Complex magnetic fields in the Sun’s atmosphere help heat it to multi-million degree temperatures and create explosive events such as solar flares that affect us here on Earth. Now a major research project led by the University of Dundee is aiming to use mathematics to boost our knowledge of how these magnetic structures are formed and the effect they have. “There is a growing appreciation of the effect that solar weather, including events such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections, has on the Earth and our atmosphere,” said Professor Gunnar Hornig, of the Magnetohydrodynamics Grou...

Moroccan and Kenyan trips raise £45,000 for Childreach International

Students from the University of Dundee, Abertay University and Dundee and Angus College have raised an incredible £45,000 for an international education charity in just one year. Last summer, a team of 16 students set out with the charity Childreach International to help build an education centre in a small village in the middle of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco. After arriving, they lived among the villagers and assisted with all the on-site manual labour from tiling to plastering to clearing dirt. The centre is now used by nursery and infant children during the day and by the women of the vil...
