Turner nominees to feature in new exhibition

Work by Turner Prize nominees will be shown at a new University of Dundee exhibition later this month.

‘Here Was Elsewhere: >> FFWD’ will open to the public on Saturday 20 January at the University’s Cooper Gallery. Over four weeks, moving image works will be shown from 24 artists who have worked in Scotland.

Amongst the featured artists will be Rosalind Nashashibi, who was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2017. The exhibition also presents Rosalind’s collaborative practice with another Turner nominee, artist Lucy Skaer. The pair have been making collaborative pieces since 2005 as Nashashibi/Skaer and focus on the act of looking and the transformative potential of film.

Curator Sophia Hao said, “Cut together as a four-week ‘film strip’, the exhibition, with the camera as its medium, brings clarity to the diverse ethos of looking, recording and seeing that thrives in artists’ moving image practices from Scotland.”

In week one of the exhibition the artists will feature the human body as a question of place and situation. The second week evades history as merely an account of what has been, registering it instead as a concrete vocal presence. For the third week, it will speak of the moving image as an ephemeral grammar of time. Giving form to narrative, the fourth and final week focuses on images that mediate practices of living into an ethos.

To celebrate the flourishing artists’ moving image practice in Scotland there will be a culminating event on Saturday 17 February. This will include a montage of all 24 artists’ works, illuminated by performances, readings and talks. This event has been co-organised with British Council.

The exhibition will preview on Friday 19 January. The show is opens the next day and runs until Saturday 17 February. The opening hours are Monday – Friday, 10am to 5pm and Saturday, 11am – 5pm.
