`Sweet spot’ for treating diabetic patients with heart failure
Researchers at the University of Dundee have discovered a `sweet spot’ in the treatment of diabetes among patients with heart failure. Diabetes and heart disease are frequently seen together in patients and can be a lethal combination. To compound the problem, some anti-diabetic medications have been shown to worsen heart conditions like heart failure, a condition where the heart muscles become too weak to effectively pump blood around the body. Now researchers led by Professor Chim Lang in the School of Medicine at Dundee have found there are hazardous effects of under- or over-treating diabetes a...

Dundee’s artistic golden age explored in new publication
A new book exploring the history of art in Dundee will be launched at the University of Dundee next week. DNA repair enzyme mapped in atomic detail
An enzyme crucial to the process of DNA repair in our cells has been mapped in atomic detail by researchers at the University of Dundee, the UK’s top-rated University for Biological Sciences. DNA repair plays a key role in human diseases such as cancer. Researchers say that revealing the 3D molecular structure of a key enzyme involved in this process could be an important step towards developing future drugs. DNA is the genetic `library’ of the cell and is so important that it must be repaired when damaged. It is the only kind of molecule in the cell that is subject to such repair. In one suc...

Christmas Oratorio and cheque presentation
The University of Dundee’s Bach Consort will perform works by the often-overlooked German composer Christoph Graupner this weekend. Until recently, Graupner’s major contribution to Western Classical Music was seen as being the fact that his employer refused him permission to take up a post in Leipzig thus allowing Johann Sebastian Bach to take the position. It was here that Bach composed major works such as the B Minor Mass and his Passion but it meant Graupner faded into obscurity until the rediscovery of his work last century. Due to a dispute over his estate, a large amount of Graupner&rsq...
