Last year’s resolution was all about the need for transformational rather than incremental change and to combine excellence in all that we do with financial sustainability. Some see this as a managerial approach, but I argued it was essential to build a collegiate spirit because investment in one part of the University must meet its financial goals to allow continuing investment elsewhere. New technology enables ultra-fast steering and shaping of light beams
A team of engineers has developed a new acousto-optic device that can shape and steer beams of light at speeds never before achieved. The new technology will enable better optical devices to be made, such as holographs that can move rapidly in real time. The research led by Bruce Drinkwater, Professor of Ultrasonics at the University of Bristol and Dr Mike MacDonald at the University of Dundee is published in the journal, Optics Express. Scottish Study Finds Improvement in Life Expectancy for Patients with Type 1 Diabetes
A major study of patients in Scotland living with type 1 diabetes has found life expectancy has improved in comparison to previous research, although it still lags significantly behind that of the general population without diabetes. The study carried out by researchers at the University of Dundee and the Scottish Diabetes Research Network shows that type 1 diabetes is associated with on average a reduction in life expectancy of about 11 years in men and about 13 years in women compared with the general Scottish population without type 1 diabetes. Fiona’s tablet tally rises to £47,000 for breast cancer research
The fantastic fundraising efforts of a Dundee woman have topped £47,000 in aid of breast cancer research, mainly thanks to sales of her homemade tablet. Mrs Fiona Edwards has been fundraising since 2003 by selling her homemade tablet at running events, nightclasses and through friends and family around Tayside and Fife.
