From shy student to stand-up success

When Jo Hastie joined the University of Dundee’s Creative Writing programme last year she was so lacking in confidence that she could not even read her work out to her fellow students.  A year on, and Jo has won a major poetry slam in Edinburgh, performed alongside the most-watched poet on YouTube, Neil Hilborn, and written and performed stand-up comedy.   To cap it all, she will graduate with a Distinction this week as she completes her Masters degree in Writing Practice and Study on Thursday 16 November. University marks over 7000 years of staff service

Hundreds of staff at the University of Dundee had their long service celebrated this week as part of the institution’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The University’s first Long Service Awards recognised the contribution made by staff from across the campus community. Around 200 staff who have worked at the University for 25 years or more received a gift. Even more venerable are a select band of 20 staff who have been with the University for 40 years or more. ‘There goes the Neighbourhood’ – 22-23 November

The ingredients that make for successful – and not so successful – neighbourhoods will be explored at a University of Dundee symposium later this month. ‘There goes the Neighbourhood’ will take place on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 November. Awards success for University spin-outs

Three University of Dundee spin-out companies have struck gold at this year’s Courier Business Awards. Exscientia was named Science and Technology Business of the Year while MyWay Digital Health won the Enterprise in Education prize and STAR-Dundee took the Design and Innovation Business of the Year accolade. All three companies grew out of University research and have demonstrated excellence in their respective fields being commercialised. Languages for all this weekend

Staff from the University of Dundee are offering members of the public the chance to get lost in another language this weekend when they host ‘Languages Lost and Found’, part of Being Human 2017, the UK’s annual festival of Humanities. Individuals and families looking for something different will have the chance to explore new languages at the Boomerang Centre on Kemback Street from 10am-2pm.
