Languages for all this weekend

Staff from the University of Dundee are offering members of the public the chance to get lost in another language this weekend when they host ‘Languages Lost and Found’, part of Being Human 2017, the UK’s annual festival of Humanities.

Individuals and families looking for something different will have the chance to explore new languages at the Boomerang Centre on Kemback Street from 10am-2pm. They will also be able to listen to readings of children’s classics such as the Gruffalo and The Very Hungry Caterpillar in a foreign tongue from 2.30pm-3.30pm at the Dundee Central Library at The Wellgate.

No bookings are required for the free events taking place on Saturday 18 November but arriving early is advised. A display of books in different languages will also be free to browse between 9.30am-5pm at the Central Library.

Marion Sporing, Senior Lecturer in Languages and European Studies at the University, said, “We cannot wait to set our languages loose across the city this weekend. Families and children are welcome to explore the exciting world of languages.

“Our fun-filled Saturday forms part of a series of events celebrating the often hidden richness and diversity of languages and cultures in Scottish society through community-led workshops and demonstrations.”

Being Human will see events take place at more than 70 universities and other organisations across the UK from 17 to 25 November, with Dundee serving as one of the main festival hubs.

Other Being Human events held at the University of Dundee include an exhibition of rare and unusual versions of the Gulliver’s Travels, the launch of a graphic novel created by local artists, writers and designers as well as a pantomime that gives Gulliver’s Travels a contemporary makeover.
