UoD Lecturer to Talk at Prestigious UN Conference

A University of Dundee lecturer has received a special invitation to speak at the United Nations Human Settlements Program in Saudi Arabia. ‌

The invitation is from H.E. Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Shaikh, Deputy Minister for Town Planning/Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs in Saudi Arabia and offers Dr. Hasam Al Waer the honour of being guest speaker at the "Saudi Urban Forum 2016" scheduled for 29th -31st March 2016 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.


‌Dr. Hasam Al Waer is a highly skilled Urbanist who writes intensively and speaks regularly on improving our urban environment. He is a specialist in Sustainable Urban Design and Evaluation Working at the University of Dundee, School of Social Sciences, with demonstrable leadership qualities with impact in academia, practice and in community out-reach. He has a passionate interest in the future of smart places and towns, in particular the development of new thinking on processes and methods to unlock sustainable urbanism. ‌

In addition to his experience as a 'master planner', Dr. Hasam Al Waer is also a facilitator and educator on sustainable urbanism, he has also promoted the “place momentum” approach jointly with Kevin Murray associates, which treats place-making for more sustainable communities as an intelligent process.

He has recently been awarded the Reed and Mallik Ltd journal prize (for the best paper in journal) for his paper ‘Improving contemporary approaches to the master planning process’ published in the journal Urban Design and Planning (Vol 167 issueDP1). He has fulfilled prestigious invitations from national and international organisations, firms and governments as a means for outreach and public engagement.
