Sustainability has emerged as one of the defining issues of the 21st century. Achieving enduring and fairer societies requires viable economies, sound science and good governance. The University’s new MSc in Sustainability platform provides training in theory, critical analysis and the practical skills to facilitate the transformations needed to deliver secure low carbon futures. Our graduates will be a new generation of change makers. The portfolio of environmental disciplines is exceptionally strong in the University as are its traditions of cross-disciplinary collaboration and interdisciplinary problem solving.
Along with the flagship MSc in Sustainability, there are four specialised pathways:

  • MSc in Sustainability and Water Security
  • MSc in Sustainability and Climate Change
  • MSc in Sustainability and Low Carbon Living
  • MSc in Sustainability and the Green Economy

The programme will be taught by leading academics from the  School of Social Sciences collectively comprising energy specialists, lawyers, economists, planners, architects and geographers. The nature of the subject material is that the programme is suitable for a wide range of graduates from environmental backgrounds looking to achieve a deeper understanding; natural science graduates and engineers looking to develop a more rounded understanding of environmental issues, especially in relation to regulation and policy; and arts and social science students wishing to use their social, economic and political perspectives to take on the challenges associated with complex environmental systems and their management.
The key aims of the programme are to:

  • Exploit Dundee’s strong traditions of inter-disciplinary research and teaching dealing with the society, economy and environment nexus
  • Provide a challenging and vibrant programme of study spanning theory and practice and equipping students for professional life
  • Develop practical skills for creating change and transformation to help individuals and society move towards more sustainable practice
  • Offer ‘conversion’ opportunities for those wishing to change career
  • Equip sustainability graduates with technical and entrepreneurial skills to take up careers in policy, management, training and research in the green economy.
