Dundee named Scottish University of the Year 2004

The Sunday Times Good University Guide has just named the University of Dundee Scottish University of the Year 2004.

Rated top in Scotland for teaching excellence and achieving the highest graduate salaries in Scotland and north of Oxford, Dundee graduates can expect to earn an average of £18,884 six months after graduating, nearly £2,000 more than the UK average, according to the Sunday Times league tables taken from Hesa data.

The University was also short-listed for UK University of the Year alongside Durham, University College London, Kingston and Manchester - only the second time that a Scottish University has been short-listed for this title.

Dundee is ranked 30 this year, climbing six places from last year and 18 places since the guide was first published in 1998. Since then, the University of Dundee has never dropped a place, a feat matched only by Cambridge and Oxford.

The Sunday Times Good University Guide is known in the sector to be one of the most consulted guides to universities by school leavers. With high circulation in many countries it is a key resource for international students considering studying in the UK.

The award was welcomed by Principal Sir Alan Langlands, "This is an excellent way to start the new academic year. The most important ingredient in any first class University is the contribution of the staff and students. This latest accolade is down to their - your - dedication, hard work and professionalism. Our philosophy is a very simple one - striving for excellence in teaching and learning, excellence in research and a belief in creating the right environment in which staff and students can develop to their full potential."

A feature in the Sunday Times Good University Guide highlighted a string of excellent teaching assessments, new campus developments, ambitions for the most IT-literate students in the country, our highly successful access programme, the highly rated medical and art schools and the new flexible modular system.
