David Foggie - the painters' painter
by Matthew Jarron
One of the highlights of the new semester is the stunning exhibition in the Tower Foyer and Lamb
Galleries by Dundee painter David Foggie (1878-1948). Curated by Matthew Jarron of Museum Services, the
exhibition brings together more than 60 paintings, drawings and prints, and features works from the
University’s own collections as well as loans from the National Galleries of Scotland, the Royal Scottish
Academy and many other public and private collections.
Born in Dundee, David Foggie became a master of painting technique, specialising in stunningly beautiful
portraits. While in Dundee he became President of the Dundee Art Society and a founder member of the
Tayport Artists Circle. Moving to Edinburgh in 1919, he became an influential teacher at Edinburgh
College of Art, where his students included Gillies, Maxwell, MacTaggart and Barns-Graham, and for many
years held the prestigious position of Secretary to the Royal Scottish Academy. Highly acclaimed and
described as one of the great artistic personalities of his time, his work has been critically neglected
since his death. This exhibition and the accompanying publication written by the Curator provides a
unique opportunity to re-evaluate an extraordinary artistic talent.
The exhibition runs until 15 October.
