Tributes to Neil Glen and Ian Durajczyk
Staff from across the University were saddened at the sudden deaths of two popular members of staff,
Neil Glen and Ian Durajczyk. Neil had over a decade's association with the University, both as a mature
student and a tutor in the Learning Enhancement Unit and the Politics Department. Ian had been with the
University since 1980, when he joined the physics department as a technician.
As a tribute to Neil, an annual football match between teams from the University and Dundee College has
been organised by Sean Donaldson, University janitor, the first of which took place in June.
The University donated a shield to present to the winning team, which has been named the Neil Glen
Memorial Shield. Cindy Wilson of the Institute of Sport and Exercise arranged for the teams to use the
University’s Riverside grounds for the match. With a winning score of 4-2, the University team were the
first recipients of the memorial shield.
Sean said, "We would like to thank the DUSA shop for providing refreshments, Lochee United for donating
footballs and Angus Thistle for the football strips."
Ian Durajczyk also passed away suddenly this summer. Paying tribute to Ian, Professor Sandy Fitzgerald of
the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences said, "Ian was an exceptional colleague who will be missed
throughout the University. He was exceptional in terms of the amazing range of contacts that he helped
across the University.
Over the past year, as part of the refurbishment of the Harris Building, Ian designed a completely new
1st and 2nd year laboratory. Sadly he passed away before the work on this laboratory was completed, but
the Division will name the new 1st and 2nd year laboratory the Ian Durajczyk Laboratory in honour of a
colleague for whom we all had a great affection and respect."
