Body memory
The final leg of a three-part international art exhibition, Body Memory: Warsaw, Potsdam, Dundee,
recently opened at the Cooper Gallery, DJCAD. The five DJCAD graduates and two lecturers involved have
already taken part in exhibitions in Poland and Germany and have been joined by their international
counterparts in Dundee for the final event.
Along with the Polish and German visitors, recent graduates Caroline Alexander, Stephanie Shiels, Thomas
Malley, Elaine Symington and Myra Gallicker, and Elaine Shemilt, Reader in Fine Art, unveiled their work
at a special preview event. Professor Kerstin Mey, Chair of Fine Art, University of Ulster, formerly
Senior lecturer in History and Theory of Art, DJCAD, has co-ordinated the project, which aims to promote
creative responses to the contemporary conception of the body.
Commenting on the exhibition, Elaine Shemilt said, "This is an opportunity for artists to foster
international links and engage in a cross-cultural dialogue. It is a fantastic opportunity for the
public to become involved in the experience by sampling the exhibited works".
The exhibition runs until 24 October and is free and open to the public.
A two week programme of events, including music, art and performance, will take place between 4-15
October in the Cooper Gallery and Lower Foyer Gallery. The programme includes the launch night for the
next release on 'discparc' - the University‘s music and audio art label.
