Freshers' welcome
With the new academic year just underway, the University recently welcomed the new cohort of first year
students who were introduced to student life with a packed week long programme of events, including live
bands, sports events, historical campus tours and debates - plus a welcome from new Rector Lorraine Kelly
and her colleagues at GMTV.
Head of the Student Advisory Service Irene Donaldson said, "Staff in the Student Advisory Service worked
flat out to make sure that everything was in place for this year's Freshers' week. A number of social and
cultural events will also be organised throughout the year for international students and their families
including ceilidhs, an international food evening, multi-cultural event, a weekend break to the Isle of
Skye, and various sightseeing trips."
In addition to the events happening at the new state of the art DUSA building, there was also an official
welcome to the University and the City at the Caird Hall, with welcome speeches from Principal, Sir Alan
Langlands and new DUSA President Fraser Miller.
Lorraine Kelly provided her welcome to the new students via video, in the form of a speech she had
pre-recorded at the GMTV studios in London.
She said, "Congratulations on being clever enough to choose the best University in the country. I know
you will all have to work really hard and put 100 per cent effort into your studies, but you should also
be having fun during your time here in Dundee. Make sure you take advantage of all the fantastic clubs
and organisations available to you. Enjoy your time here!"
