University scientists visit Fife primary pupils
Scientists from the University of Dundee have been passing on their expert knowledge to children at Newport Primary School this week as part of the school’s science week. One highlight of the week came during a session with Dr Patrick Pedrioli who was explaining a disease-causing mutation, when one of the pupils commented, “So the cell is like a city and sometimes somebody breaks the law!" Research seeks to understand and assess loneliness in people with cancer
A PhD student at the University of Dundee has developed an index for measuring loneliness in cancer patients which she hopes will form the basis of better care and even improved outcomes for people with the disease. Kathryn Cunningham’s thesis aims to enhance understanding of loneliness in cancer in order to provide a basis for future assessment and intervention. Kathryn used questionnaires and interviews to explore the nature of and degree to which patients with cancer experience loneliness after treatment finishes. 'From the Fun Factory to the Treehouse: Dundee Comics - past, present & future'
The history and future of comics in Dundee will be explored at a public event at the University of Dundee next week. Dr Chris Murray, a senior lecturer in English and Film Studies and Director of the Scottish Centre for Comics Studies, will be talking about the local industry and painting a picture of how it might look in years to come at the Dalhousie Building at 5.30pm on Thursday, 27th March. DJCAD records success on creative loop
Two students and one graduate from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design were last night named winners of Creative Scotland Media Awards. Nuria Valedon, Jeppe R. Nielsen and Alan McIlrath picked up prizes at the Creative Loop Student Media Festival 2014, which was held at Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts over the past two days, culminating in the awards ceremony last night. Academic excellence recognised with RSE Royal Medal
The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) has recognised the University of Dundee’s Dr Robert Ryan as an outstanding early career researcher in its annual awards. Dr Ryan, a Principal Investigator and Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow in the University’s Division of Molecular Microbiology, was awarded the RSE/Patrick Neill Medal for his work in the field of microbiology, particularly the translational aspects of his work to develop new biomarkers, diagnostics and potential treatments for cystic fibrosis patients.
