World renowned architect Frank Gehry, whose only UK building is the new Maggie's Centre for cancer care in the grounds of Ninewells Hospital, is to accept an honorary degree from the University on September 26.
Canadian-born Gehry, who is famous for designing such breathtaking buildings as the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, will be honoured for his pioneering 40-year contribution to architecture. He will accept his degree from University Chancellor Sir James Black during a special ceremony at 11.30am on September 26 in the Bonar Hall, when he visits the city to officially open the Maggie's Centre.
University Principal and Vice Chancellor Sir Alan Langlands said, "We are extremely honoured and proud that Mr Gehry is accepting an honorary degree from the University. It is a real coup for Dundee that Mr Gehry chose to site his only UK building in the city and I am sure that Maggie's Centre patients will find the building a real source of inspiration at a difficult time in their lives."
Gehry will join a list of distinguished achievers to have accepted degrees from the University in 2003, which includes Stella McCartney, Seamus Heaney and Vanessa Lawrence, Director General of Ordnance Survey.
