An exploration of the boundary between walking and architecture. Norberg-Schultz defined architecture as the development of a system of meaningful places that give form and structure to our experiences of the world (1) . This statement challenges architects to find meaningful ways of modelling the experiential landscape.
This PhD research is attempting to develop practical approaches in confronting the problems of modelling landscape. It is building on a geographic model of understanding landscape as a system of places (2) and the creation of these places through acts of discovery and naming (3). It is driven by an understanding of walking as a way to explore this landscape and to structure it (4) . This includes walking as both the elementary form of ordinary landscape engagement (5) and as a varied artistic practice. As a counterpoint to the typically mechanical approach of architectural contextual analysis this study is using creative production techniques to generate new knowledge of landscapes (areas as perceived by people (6) ). It is concerned with attempts to appropriate techniques from the disciplines of aesthetic walking. It is investigating the contemporary use of these performative acts of walking within architectural processes of place investigation and creation.
