Contemporary political and academic discourse suggests that globalization is a recent phenomenon. In contrast, this paper, focussing upon economic globalization, argues that in the case of Dundee, the last century has seen a process of de-globalization, with the local economy becoming much less affected by international economic forces than in 1900. This case allows us to problematize many current assumptions about the trajectory of economic development.
