‘Fats: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly’ – Café Science Extra on 12th November

The good, bad and ugly sides of fats will be laid out by University of Dundee PhD student Francesca Nardi at the next Café Science Extra event. The talk takes place at Dundee Science Centre at 6pm on Wednesday, 12th November and will see Francesca discuss the need to tackle the global obesity epidemic while acknowledging that fat is an essential component of our diet which fulfils a wide range of biological functions. Dundee iGEM team scores a hat-trick at world jamboree

A team of students from the University of Dundee has won an unprecedented hat-trick of major prizes at the iGEM world jamboree in Boston for their project to develop `The Lung Ranger’, a device to help combat some of the effects of cystic fibrosis. iGEM – the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition – asks students to tackle a real world problem by designing and building a new device or system from a kit of biological parts. International literary superstar Jodi Picoult will appear at the University of Dundee later this week. The event, which takes place at the Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, on Thursday, 6th November, is one of two free extension events that bookend this year’s Dundee Literary Festival. Children’s University comes to Dundee

Dundee’s higher and further education institutions are joining forces to launch the Children’s University in Dundee, offering children aged 5 to 14 a `Passport to Learning’. The Children’s University promotes exciting learning and creative activities to children outwith school hours in which they can earn credits for certificates. University of Dundee historian Dr Derek Patrick will this week deliver a special Remembrance Lecture to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. 'Changing Perceptions?
