Award-winning jewellery designer Jane Gowans, a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD), has been named Independent Woman of the Year at the annual Women Ahead Business Awards.
Regarded as one of the country’s top young designers, she has developed her own business – Jane Gowans Jewellery – and sold work in prestigious outlets such as Harvey Nichols. She was shortlisted as Accessories Designer of the Year in the Drapers Footwear and Accessories Awards 2013 and as Accessories Designer of the Year in the Scottish Fashion Awards.
In addition, she works as technician for DJCAD’s Jewellery & Metal Design programme, which she graduated from in 2009.
The Royal Bank of Scotland Independent Woman of the Year is given to a female director, consultant or sole trader who has the drive and ambition to create a long-term, viable business.
“This award means a lot to me,” she said. “It’s great to be recognised in this way and shows that all the hard work is worth it. Starting your own business is very rewarding and I hope that the success of all the women being celebrated encourages more people to realise their ambitions.”
Women Ahead was launched in 2001 to encourage, support and connect women in business and the professions in Dundee and Angus.
The Women Ahead Business Awards offer a unique opportunity to recognise the achievements of women in the area, celebrating their success and that of their peers and business associates. Women from many different working backgrounds have an opportunity to be recognised for their hard work, vision and dedication.
