`Wha’s Like Us?’ – 5 Million Questions public event

The eyes of the world may be on Scotland as it approaches the referendum but what are they seeing?

Journalists and researchers from Ireland, Catalonia and South Africa will join David Torrance for a 5 Million Questions public event at the University of Dundee this Saturday, September 13th, to look at how the referendum debate has been received outside the UK.

“It is always interesting to get a sense of perspective from outside the boundaries of a debate which has been passionate and is increasingly hotly contested,” said David Torrance, Associate Director of 5 Million Questions and panel host for the evening.

“The debate is being covered by journalists from all around the world and is of particular interest to those from places likes Ireland and Catalonia where issues of sovereignty and secession are very much part of the conversation.

“I am sure we can are going to hear some very interesting views on how the referendum has played out in the eyes of the wider world, a perspective that will likely give us plenty to think about with the referendum only a week away.”

The panel consists of:

  • Laura Pous, London Correspondent for the Catalan news agency CAN and RAC1 radio station
  • Peter Geoghegan, Irish-born writer and journalist
  • Dr David Patrick, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of the Free State (South Africa)

They will discuss what they make of the debate so far, how it compares with debates about sovereignty and secession back in their own countries, and how they present the nuances, passions and disagreements of the `Scottish Question’ to viewers and readers around the world.

`Wha’s Like Us’ takes place at 6pm on Saturday 13th September in the Dalhousie Building at the University of Dundee.

5 Million Questions has been established by the University of Dundee to examine the many issues around Scotland’s constitutional debate, stimulating wider discussion, applying academic rigour to examination of the issues, and engaging with the public on all aspects of the major questions they are facing.
