Waterfront plan wins Stephen 2014 Dundee Civic Award

The 2014 Dundee Civic Award has been won by Stephen MacLeod for his proposed redevelopment of one of the Dundee Waterfront’s flagship plots.

The award is presented annually to the Town and Regional Planning student from the University of Dundee who best responds to a brief set by City Council planning officials. The competition forms part of the students’ third-year coursework, and this year challenged them to explore options for high quality mixed-use development on a site within the Central Waterfront area.

Referred to as Plot 2 on the Waterfront Masterplan document, the site is currently a Council car parking site bordered by Yeaman Shore, Union Street, South Marketgait and West Marketgait.

The competition winners received their prizes from Dundee City Council city development convener Will Dawson. Cllr Dawson and other judges Gregor Hamilton (Head of Planning), Alistair Hilton (Senior Planning Officer), and John Gray (Planning Officer) considered presentations by five shortlisted students before naming Stephen as the winner.

Stephen wins £100 while classmates Sean Panton and Lisa Proudfoot received £60 each for being runners-up. Matthew Jackson and Rebecca Higgins finished in joint third place and each earned £40.

“This competition has helped students to gain skills in analysing and applying legal requirements relating to development management, planning issues, site analysis, and report writing and graphics,” said Dr Deepak Gopinath, a Town and Regional Planning Lecturer at the University.

“The students were required to prepare either posters or animation/flythrough to illustrate their concept layout and design solutions for the site.”

The annual award sees the local authority and university work together on a project to inspire the imaginations of planners of the future to come up with ideas and solutions for urban living.
