'The Scottish Independence Referendum: Yes or No'
Published On Wed 19 Mar 2014 by Grant Hill
Iain McMillan, Director of CBI Scotland, will tomorrow visit the University of Dundee to discuss the potential implications of September’s independence referendum.
The event, hosted by the University’s 5 Million Questions initiative, takes place at the Dalhousie Building at 6pm. Mr McMillan, one of Scotland’s leading experts on business, will explore the case for and against Scottish independence by discussing key matters in the debate, including the EU, currency, tax, borders and trade, immigration, laws, rules and regulation and Scotland’s place in the world.
“Iain McMillan led a distinguished career in banking before becoming an ambassador for Scotland’s business community almost two decades ago,” said Michael Marra, Director of 5MQ. “He is therefore in a unique position to comment on the issues surrounding this year’s historic referendum.”
Iain McMillan was educated at Bearsden Academy and is a fellow of several prestigious organisations, including the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Association of International Accountants, Royal Society of Arts and the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
Following a 23-year career in banking and two years as CBI Scotland Assistant Director, he was appointed director in 1995. As such, he has executive responsibility for the CBI's Scottish operations, leading Scottish business representation in Scotland, the UK and beyond. In 2003, he was awarded a CBE for services to lifelong learning in Scotland.
The University launched the 5 Million Questions project to examine the issues surrounding the biggest event in Scotland for over 300 years. Every aspect of Scottish life stands to be impacted upon by the result of the 2014 referendum, and everyone has a question about how the decision will affect them and the future of the country.
The public debate to this stage has been both highly technical and overtly party political. 5 Million Questions aims to stimulate wider debate, apply academic rigour to examination of the issues, and engage with the public on all aspects of the major questions they are facing.
‘The Scottish Independence Referendum: Yes or No’ takes place at the Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, at 6pm on Thursday, 20th March.
