Student Safety Week

A series of classes covering everything from chip pans to passwords, sensible drinking to self-defence, will next week teach University of Dundee students how to stay safe.

Student Safety Week takes place from Monday 10th to Friday 14th November, with sessions being held at Dundee University Students’ Association (DUSA) each day from 12-2pm. Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Red Cross among the organisations advising students about how they can protect themselves from harm.

The subjects to be covered include anti-social behaviour, digital security, and spiked drinks, while self-defence classes led by Chris Clarke, Operations Manager at DUSA, will take place on the Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Safety Week is being run jointly by DUSA and the University’s Student Services team. Frontline Support Worker Sheena Stewart said the programme would help to keep students safe in the real and virtual worlds.

“The week-long programme of events will promote safety awareness amongst our students and help them avoid possible risks wherever they are,” she said. “We are delighted to have so many external and internal agencies lending their expertise and engaging with students, who may well be young and living away from home for the first time.

“Police officers, fire officers, first-aiders and workers raising awareness of the risks associated with alcohol are just some of the people who will be coming along. Throughout the week we will also have a presence from IT to flag up how important it is for students to protect their passwords and personal information and the consequences of not doing so.”
