Six figure funding boost for V&A at Dundee

V&A at Dundee has secured £100,000 from players of People's Postcode Lottery to enable it reach out to local communities ahead of building work commencing on site.

The international design museum has been granted the funding to work with people in surrounding areas and across Scotland.

Sarah Saunders, Head of Learning and Engagement for V&A at Dundee, said the money will enable the project to develop its community activities and encourage widespread participation as part of its core outreach programme.

'This generous contribution will provide a significant boost to our plans to engage communities locally and in the wider area. We will launch our first outreach project in the spring, and this new funding will really help us to connect with people across the nation, from families, young people and schools to local communities, the creative industries and wider business.

'These initiatives are designed to give people a taste of what is to come when V&A at Dundee opens by encouraging them to share their experience, knowledge and thoughts on design, as well as inviting them to engage with Scotland's rich and innovative design heritage. The funding will also enable us to work with Scotland's brightest up and coming design talent.

'We would like to thank players of People's Postcode Lottery for their support and very much hope that they will become involved in our outreach activities in the lead up to, and beyond, the opening of V&A at Dundee.'

Deputy Head of Charities at People's Postcode Lottery, Kate Pearson, said: 'We are delighted that our players are able to support V&A at Dundee's imaginative approach to engaging with a wide range of communities. Design plays a major part in all of our lives and it's been wonderful to see V&A at Dundee developing its audience in this way and forging long-term partnerships with variety of organisations at a local and national level.'

  • V&A at Dundee will be an international centre for design, housed in a world-class building at the heart of Dundee's revitalised waterfront. It will host major exhibitions, celebrate our design heritage, inspire and promote contemporary talent, and encourage design innovation for the future. Unlike any other museum in Scotland, V&A at Dundee will focus on design - not design as a separate discipline, but its everyday impact - how the imaginative design of seemingly ordinary objects can inspire and delight. V&A at Dundee will inform, educate and entertain but also explicitly, through its wider programmes, generate new creativity and innovation across Scotland.
  • V&A at Dundee is being delivered by Design Dundee Ltd, a partnership between the Victoria and Albert Museum - the world's greatest museum of art and design - and Dundee City Council, the University of Dundee, the University of Abertay Dundee and Scottish Enterprise.
  • The Scottish Government has committed £15m in capital towards the project's £45million budget. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a first round pass of up to £9.2m and they, along with Creative Scotland, are currently considering round 2 submissions with decisions expected early this year. A further £15m is also being sought from private sources, generous philanthropic pledges and gifts with a significant amount already raised towards this goal to date. http://www.vandadundee.org/
