Quiz and games night in aid of Team Malawi

A quiz and games night in aid of a group of staff and students from the University of Dundee trying to improve education and medical provision in Malawi will take place this weekend.
'Team Malawi' will hold the fundraiser at the Westport Bar from 7.30pm on Saturday, 18th January and are looking for as many people as possible to attend and help their efforts. This is the first of several events set to take place ahead of the group's planned visit to Africa in June.
The trip aims to deliver much needed equipment to schools and a medical clinic in the town of Gowa, as well as helping on a practical level.
An African Wine Tasting Night will take place at Aitken Wines, Dundee on Thursday, 6th February, when participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the continent's wine while doing their bit for a worthy cause. A charity dinner will also be held towards the end of March.
Team Malawi consists of Gordon Campbell, Adriana Karpinska, Kaitlin Mayne, Alistair Vannet and Lorna Macpherson.
Lorna, an administrator within the University's Dental Health Services Research Unit, said she only became involved in the project by chance but is now committed to helping the group's efforts.
'I was looking at the University's weekly update email and noticed an appeal for people to get involved and I thought 'why not?' she said. 'I didn't know all that much about the needs of people in Malawi but I've learned so much since and am really enjoying working with my other team members. Hopefully we can get a good turn-out at our upcoming events and really make a difference to the people we will be working with in Gowa.'
The University's Enterprise Gym generously donated the proceeds of its Winter Party to Team Malawi, boosting the fundraising total, and a cake sale at the University library also ensured that bookworms enjoyed a sweet treat in return for a donation.
Team Malawi are also collecting unwanted items to deliver to the people of Gowa, in particular Maths and Science equipment and books. Any unwanted books can be handed in to the University's Tower Building Reception or collected by Team Malawi by arrangement. Equipment in the form of solar-powered calculators, wall charts and other items are also being collected to deliver to the schools in Malawi.
The quiz and games night takes place at 7.30pm at the Westport bar on Saturday, 18th January. All are welcome and there will be a raffle, games and cash prize for the winning team. The entry cost is £6 per person, including food, with all proceeds going to Team Malawi.
