Professor Bruce Guthrie, of the University of Dundee, has been appointed to the post of Scottish Primary Care Research Champion.
The Scottish Primary Care Research Champion is a new role, which takes on the responsibilities previously held by the Clinical Lead of the Scottish Primary Care Research Network. The appointment of Professor Guthrie was made by the Chief Scientist Office following a process of competitive recruitment.
Professor Guthrie said, “It is an honour to take on this role, which will build on the work of Professor Frank Sullivan and all the Scottish Primary Care Research Network staff who have built a world-leading research network from scratch.
“The network already supports over 50 studies per year, ensuring that important research is delivered as quickly and easily as possible. I look forward to working with the network team and with the Chief Scientist Office, to help ensure that Scotland stays at the forefront of medical research to inform and improve the care of future patients.”
Professor Guthrie is Professor of Primary Care Medicine at the University of Dundee. He is a working GP, practicing in Cardenden in Fife, and has previously held research positions at the Universities of Dundee, Edinburgh, and California San Francisco. He has extensive experience in conducting research, with a particular interest in prescribing and healthcare delivery. He sits on several NHS advisory bodies, including the NICE Quality and Outcomes Framework Indicators Advisory Committee.
