Professor Angus Lamond made Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences

The University of Dundee’s Professor Angus Lamond is among the leading medical experts from across the UK who have been recognised for excellence in research by election to the Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Professor Lamond is Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow and Professor of Biochemistry at the University’s College of Life Sciences. His career has seen him carry out seminal work on gene expression, proteomics and the structure and functional organisation of the nucleus of mammalian cells.

He has previously been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 2011, he was awarded the Novartis Medal and Prize of the Biochemical Society and has also won the Medal of Honour from Charles University in Prague and the Colworth Medal of the British Biochemical Society among other accolades during his illustrious career.

He said, “I am very pleased to receive this recognition for our work, which has been made possible thanks to the wonderful research environment that has been built up at Dundee. I would like to thank all of my colleagues who have worked very hard over the years to make Dundee such a leading centre for biomedical research.

“These awards to individual scientists are a great tribute to the outstanding research facilities we have at Dundee and I am sure the imminent opening of the new CTIR building will lead to yet further success for Dundee researchers.”

Academy Fellows are elected for excellence in medical research, for innovative application of scientific knowledge or for their conspicuous service to healthcare. The expertise of the new Fellows includes haematology, bioinformatics, immunology, psychiatry, biochemistry and health services provision.

Professor Sir John Tooke PMedSci, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences said, “The Academy of Medical Sciences represents the excellence and diversity of medical science in the UK, and this is evident in the broad range of expertise demonstrated by this year’s new Fellows.

“They each bring a unique perspective which we will value immensely. Their election is a much deserved honour for the outstanding achievements they have shown throughout their careers. I know they will contribute greatly to the Academy, and I am delighted to welcome them all to the Fellowship.”

The 44 new Fellows were selected from a pool of 351 candidates. Three nominators from within the Fellowship must back each candidate before they are elected. They will be formally admitted to the Academy at a ceremony on Wednesday, 2nd July.
