Prestigious Wolfson Research Merit Award for Professor Sandy Cochran

Professor Sandy Cochran, of the University of Dundee, is one of 14 leading researchers from around the UK to be appointed a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award holder.

Jointly funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the scheme aims to provide universities with additional support to enable them to attract science talent from overseas and retain respected UK scientists of outstanding achievement and potential.

The newly appointed award holders are working on a wide range of topics including medical imaging, climate change and string theory.

Professor Cochran is based in the Institute for Medical Science and Technology at Dundee. His work involves pioneering research in micro-ultrasound to improve the resolution of this new technique and, just as importantly, to incorporate the results into tools suitable for clinical implementation.

He is the third researcher from Dundee to receive a Wolfson Research Merit Award this year, following on from Professors Claire Halpin and Sue Black.

“I am delighted to be the recipient of this highly valuable award, following the path recently established by Professor Black and Professor Halpin,” said Professor Cochran.

“I am also very much enjoying assisting colleagues in the tremendously exciting process of expanding the Institute for Medical Science and Technology, continuing the growth from just three people seven years ago to around 100 now, working at the interface between engineering and the physical sciences, life sciences and medicine.”
