Law students seeking support to make their moot point

A group of University of Dundee Law students set to compete in Europe’s most prestigious legal debating competition are appealing for help to get them to The Hague.

The team of Carlotta Bruessel, Sanjana Swaroop, Kevin Burns and Aislinn Logan will represent Scotland in the semi-finals - and hopefully the final – of the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition at the Peace Palace in The Hague at the end of April.

They will be competing against teams from across Europe at the event, which has been running for almost 40 years. Student teams are presented with a case involving a fictitious dispute between two states and have to defend the position of either side to the United Nations’ most important legal organ, the International Court of Justice.

The judges include representatives of the real International Court of Justice, the Iran-United States Tribunal, Professors of Law and ambassadors schooled in international law.

"It is a daunting challenge to take on but we are really excited to be representing Scotland and pitting our wits against students from across Europe,” said Carlotta Bruessel, the team captain.

“Dundee has a strong tradition of success in moots and we hope to be able to add another chapter to that.”

Although they are representing Scotland in the competition, the Dundee team are themselves a league of nations. Fourth-year students Carlotta and Sanjana are from Australia and India respectively, while second-years Kevin and Aislinn are both from Northern Ireland.

The students have launched a fundraising drive to enable them to get to The Hague and take part in the competition. They are looking to raise around £2000 to cover the registration fee, travel and accommodation and are appealing to local law firms and legal professionals to support them.

Anyone who wishes to support the team can do so through their donations website at http://www.gofundme.com/78p40k or by calling the School of Law at the University on 01382 384461.
