Launch of Tayside Institute for Global Health

A new centre raising awareness of worldwide health issues and promoting global citizenship will be launched by the University of Dundee tomorrow.

The Tayside Institute for Global Health (TIGH) will be launched at the Gannochy Trust Lecture Theatre, School of Medicine, Ninewells Hospital, on Friday, 22nd August. The inter-disciplinary collaboration will focus on learning, research and direct service in predominantly low income countries and resource-poor areas. It will engage with staff and students from the University and NHS Tayside with an interest in the subject and making a difference to global health issues.

The initiative aims to create synergies between different disciplines, provide opportunities for cross discipline teaching and introduce student and research colleagues to partner sites overseas. The strategy, designed to align with the University’s Transformation Vision, will continue to be developed by the TIGH Steering Group over the next 12 months.

Project leader Dr Neil Merrylees, a Clinical Teacher at the School of Medicine, said, “We want to involve everyone with an interest in global health issues from across the University and NHS Tayside as part of our mission to transform lives across the world.”

The launch ceremony will also see bursaries funded by the Hospital Saturday Fund for overseas electives being presented to seven students.
