Kilt up and ceilidh on for Malawi

A group of students and staff from the University of Dundee are encouraging the local community to kilt up and ceilidh on later this month in aid of their campaign to improve education and medical provision in Malawi.

‘Team Malawi’ will hold a fundraising ceilidh at the Landmark Suite, DoubleTree by Hilton Dundee on Saturday, 29th March. This is the latest event set to take place ahead of the group’s planned visit to the African country in June, when they will deliver much needed equipment to schools and a medical clinic in the town of Gowa, as well as helping on a practical level.

Team Malawi consists of Gordon Campbell, Adriana Karpinska, Kaitlin Mayne, Alistair Vannet and Lorna Macpherson.

Lorna, an administrator within the University’s Dental Health Services Research Unit, said, “We are holding this event to celebrate what we love about Scotland and what Scotland can do for Malawi. We’ve had a lot of support from the University community and the public generally and that will help us make a difference to the people we will be working with in Gowa.”

An African Wine Tasting, cake sales, quiz nights and other fundraisers have been held, while generous donations have helped Team Malawi raise more than £7,400 and now hope the ceilidh will help them reach their £10,000 target.

Lorna will also be doing a bungee jump in Pitlochry on Sunday and donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/Gordon-Campbell9.

Team Malawi are also collecting unwanted items to deliver to the people of Gowa, in particular Maths and Science equipment and books. Any unwanted books can be handed in to the University’s Tower Building Reception or collected by Team Malawi by arrangement. Maths and Science equipment in the form of solar-powered calculators, wall charts and other items are also being collected to deliver to the schools in Malawi.

The ceilidh takes place at 7.30pm on Saturday, 29th March in the DoubleTree by Hilton Dundee. Tickets cost £15 each for the ceilidh and supper. A raffle and auction will take place while entertainment will be provided by the Staffin Island ceilidh band.

Tickets can be bought by emailing admin@teammalawi.org.uk or by calling 07595 428209.
