Two jewellery students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) have scooped prizes at the Goldsmith's Precious Metal Bursary Awards 2014.
Level 4 students Cathy Wang and Michelle Ho will each receive bursaries to enable them to buy precious metals for their degree work. They were recognised in the national competition, which is open to students from universities and colleges across the UK studying jewellery or a related design subject.
Bursaries of up to £1,000 are awarded each academic year to candidates whose designs exhibit exciting and innovative use of precious metals. Winners are publicised at the New Designers exhibition and their finished pieces may be showcased afterwards at the Goldsmiths' Centre as part of a high profile industry event.
A total of seven bursaries were awarded this year, meaning DJCAD students scooped more than 25 per cent of the awards on offer.
Teena Ramsay, Jewellery & Metal Design Course Director at DJCAD, praised both winners, and said their collective achievements represented a great success for the whole institution.
She said, 'To receive one of these awards is a fantastic boost to students' confidence at a crucial stage in their studies. It is also a fantastic recognition for DJCAD as a whole and will help Cathy and Michelle's CV's to stand out from the crowd when they look beyond graduation.'
The competition prizes allow winners of the bursary to purchase silver, gold, palladium or platinum to make their final piece in precious metal. Entrants to the competition were required to submit a design proposal and supporting material for their final project. Their work demonstrates design development, quality and consideration of design, professionalism of presentation and individual creativity.
In addition to the bursaries to buy precious metal, winners receive a personalised Award Certificate and an Award Winners display card for their Degree Show later this year. The degree show runs from May 16th to 25th 2014.
