Jersey inquiry role for Dundee expert
Published On Wed 19 Mar 2014 by Roddy Isles
A University of Dundee academic has been named as one of the panel members for the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, established to find out what happened in care and foster homes on the island.
Alyson Leslie is an expert in child care inquiries and reviews and has investigated the deaths of children and harm to children across the UK for over 20 years. She worked with Haringey Council in the aftermath of Baby Peter's death to see how the lessons learned from the tragedy had been implemented.
Alyson runs the Fatality Review and Investigation Studies Team at the University of Dundee
She is joined on the Inquiry Panel by Frances Oldham QC, who is chairing proceedings, and Professor Sandy Cameron CBE, former Director of Social Work in Scotland and Chairman of the Parole Board.
The Panel is determined to get to the truth about what happened in the care system over many decades, and to identify what lessons need to be learned for the future.
Alyson said the inquiry was aware that potential witnesses, among them those who had lived in care and foster homes on Jersey, were now scattered across the UK and even further afield.
“This is a population that has now dispersed across the globe but it is vital we hear from them if we are to fully understand what happened in care and foster services over a long period of time,” said Alyson.
The Inquiry is particularly interested to hear from:
- those who have been in care homes or foster care in Jersey
- anyone responsible for providing or monitoring these services.
- anyone who had engagement with care and foster services, whatever their perspective.
