James Chalmers awarded RCPE John Munro Medal for Excellence in Teaching

Dr James Chalmers, of the University of Dundee, has been awarded the inaugural Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) John Munro Medal for Excellence in Teaching.

The prize recognises the significant contributions to training and teaching made by young doctors. Dr Chalmers was nominated by a range of medical students, junior doctors and more senior colleagues. 

Professor Derek Bell, President of the RCPE, wrote that Dr Chalmers has made an “exceptional contribution” to teaching and training.

Dr Chalmers works as a clinical academic and respiratory physician. He is much sought after as a research project supervisor, and has given many medical students and trainees a helping hand onto the first step of an academic career. His students have won a number of national and international prizes.

Dr Chalmers said “I am very grateful to all the talented and enthusiastic students and junior doctors I have worked with over the past five years. This, and the recent award of the Chiron medal to Dundee’s Professor Sara Marshall, is really a recognition of the great emphasis the University places on encouraging students and young doctors to take part in research and to reach their potential.

“To have the opportunity to work with so many talented young clinicians is a great privilege.“

Dr Chalmers will receive his award at the RCPE St Andrew’s Day Festival Symposium on December 5^th 2014.
