‘In Conversation with Bill Forsyth’ – AHRI public lecture
Published On Mon 20 Oct 2014 by Grant Hill
The legendary Scottish filmmaker Bill Forsyth, writer and director of classics including ‘Gregory’s Girl’ and ‘Local Hero’, will discuss his career in a public event at the University of Dundee on Wednesday, 29th October.
The event is the latest in the series of AHRI Lectures, organised by the Arts & Humanities Research Institute at the University. Bill Forsyth will join Dr Brian Hoyle, of the English and Film Programme, for a discussion about his career, including an in-depth look at his 1987 masterpiece, ‘Housekeeping’, and the process of adapting a novel to the screen.
Dr Hoyle said, “This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear Bill Forsyth talk generally about his work. However, I am especially pleased that he will be speaking in some detail about his film `Housekeeping’. It is, to my mind, his masterpiece and one of the finest films of the 1980s, although it is shamefully little-known.
“The film is based on the novel by Marilynne Robinson and it will be fascinating to hear Mr Forsyth's insights into the adaptation process and about his experiences working in Hollywood as well as Scotland. He is very engaging and full of great stories, so I think this is going to be a lively and memorable event.”
The event takes place in the D’Arcy Thompson Lecture Theatre at the Tower Building on Perth Road at 6pm on Wednesday, 29th October. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
The event is preceded by a wine reception at 5pm in the Tower Foyer and there will also be a public question and answer session after the main event.
