'How to Inspire the Next Generation of Women in Computing?'

It is one of the most important sectors now and for the future but a significant question remains over how to encourage more women to follow careers in computing.

This Friday, March 14th, high achieving women from Government, business and academia will gather at the University of Dundee this week to tell how they have achieved success and discuss how a greater degree of equality in computing.

The event will feature contributions from Shona Robison MSP, Lynsey Bowes, a Vice-President at JP Morgan, and Rebecca Hastings, Senior Consultant at Harvey Nash and a Global Ambassador for Women in Technology.

Female computing students from universities across Scotland will also be attending and giving brief talks on what inspires them.

Dr Karen Petrie is Head of Undergraduate Studies in Computing at the University of Dundee and Director of Education for the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA), which has organised this week’s event.

Dr Petrie said, "As one of my great computing heroes, Karen Sparck Jones, famously said, 'Computing is too important to be left to men'.

“The only way we will inspire more young girls to consider a career in computing is if both educational establishments and the ICT industry work together to show young girls what exciting careers there are in the computing world. This event will boost that partnership.”

`How to Inspire the Next Generation of Women in Computing’ takes place in the Queen Mother Building at the University of Dundee from 1pm to 5pm on Friday, March 14th.
