Generosity leads to diabetes donation

A request by a pair of Perth Ramblers for friends not to give them any birthday presents but to make a donation to diabetes research instead has raised over £300.
Stewart Inglis and Jean Sharp, who are both members of the Ramblers group in Perth, recently celebrated their 70th and 80th birthdays respectively and were joined by friends to help celebrate the milestone events.
“Both of us had the same idea that rather than receiving presents we would be happier seeing the money spent going towards a good cause,” said Mr Inglis. “I am diabetic myself and know the great work the staff at the University are doing to find new ways of treating diabetes, so we asked folk to make their donation.
“We are absolutely delighted that people have been so generous.”
Ewan Pearson, Professor of Diabetic Medicine at the University, said, “This is a marvellous gesture by Mr Inglis and Mrs Sharp. We rely on the public in so many ways, for donations and for their direct help in supporting our research by joining our clinical studies.
“Every pound given, every bit of research that patients get involved with, is helping transform lives.”
Mr Inglis and Mrs Sharp presented the cheque for £320 to Professor Pearson at the Strathmore Diabetes Centre at Ninewells.
