'From Here to Here' - award-winning artist returns to alma mater for new exhibition

An exhibition of work by multiple award-winning artist Saul Robertson will open at the Lamb Gallery, University of Dundee, this weekend.

Saul graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD), part of the University, in 2000. The exhibition, entitled 'From Here to Here' opens on Saturday, 18th January and features two of Saul's works from his time as a student at DJCAD alongside other pieces which illustrate the path his career has taken between then and now.

Shortly after graduating, Saul was voted Young Artist of the Year at the Hunting Art Prizes at the Royal College of Art in London. Since then he has won numerous awards including The City of Glasgow Prize, The David Cargill Senior Award, The David Cargill Award, The Armour Award, and The James Torrance Memorial Award at The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. His work can be also found in many public collections.

Saul explained that the exhibition presented an opportunity to see some of his earliest work alongside other significant works from throughout his career so far.

'The exhibition is selected from work produced over the last thirteen years or so,' he said. 'I think it documents how my work has developed over this period. The earliest work in the show was produced while I was as a student and was painted from photographs.

'The work I did in the years after graduation was based solely on direct observation of the motif. This gradually gave way to my current practice of combining elements painted from direct observation with elements painted from the imagination. These paintings are static images amid an ever-moving world and, in some ways, offer a small contemplative space. The viewer can enter this space and hopefully be offered some sort of perspective on the flow of time.'

Saul will be giving a guided tour of the exhibition at some point during February, and details of this event will be announced as soon as possible.

'From Here to Here' is open from 9.30am-8.30pm from Monday to Friday and 9.30am-4.30pm each Saturday until 8th March.
