Former Kuwaiti health minister to give first international horizons lecture at Dundee

Dr Hilal Al-Sayer, Kuwait’s former Minister for Health, will give the first International Horizons lecture at the University of Dundee’s College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing on Wednesday March 19th.

Dr Al-Sayer is a distinguished surgeon and healthcare leader who was Dean of Medicine at Kuwait University before heading the country’s Ministry of Health.

He is currently Vice-President of the Kuwait Red Cross Society, Chairman of both the Board of Trustees and the International Scientific Advisory Board for the Dasman Diabetes Institute, President of the Kuwait Association for the Care of Children in Hospices and President of the world-renowned Bayt Abdullah Children's Hospice.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr Al-Sayer to Dundee and honoured that he will deliver our first International Horizons lecture,” said Professor Andrew Morris, Dean of Medicine at the University of Dundee.

“There are very strong links between Dundee and Kuwait which are having a real impact on diabetes research, education, treatment and prevention. Almost 1 in 4 adults in Kuwait is living with diabetes resulting in huge challenges for the delivery of quality health services.  Education is vital and the University of Dundee now has almost 200 students learning in Kuwait being supervised by academics and NHS colleagues in Dundee.”

Dr Al-Sayer’s visit builds on the strong links established between Dundee and Kuwait through the Kuwait-Scotland eHealth Innovation Network. The Network was established in 2010 between five partners – Dasman Diabetes Institute, Ministry of Health in Kuwait, the University, NHS Tayside and Aridhia Informatics Ltd.

Dr Al-Sayer will deliver his lecture at 4pm on Wednesday March 19th in the Gannochy Trust Lecture Theatre at the Medical School’s Ninewells campus.

Earlier on Wednesday he will be visiting the Rachel House children’s hospice in Kinross.
