‘Engage and Explore The University of Dundee’

Teachers and skills development advisors from across Scotland will visit the University of Dundee tomorrow to be brought up to date with admissions and recruitment policy in light of seismic changes across the education sector.

‘Engage and Explore The University of Dundee’ will take place at the Dalhousie Building from 10.30am-3pm on Wednesday 21st May. Presentations will be delivered throughout the day by key members of staff to highlight the University’s work with regards to Curriculum for Excellence, contextual admissions, alternative pathways and school engagement programme.

Attendees, comprising guidance teachers from schools across the country as well as Skills Development Scotland (SDS) advisors, will also tour the campus and hear from leading academics about the latest research and developments happening across the University.

Karen Martin, of Admissions and Student Recruitment, said, “We have invited teachers and SDS staff to campus to make sure they are aware of the exciting new developments taking place here and refresh their knowledge of the University of Dundee so they can answer any questions applicants may have.

“Curriculum for Excellence is the biggest change to take place in Scottish secondary education for a generation and we will be outlining the work we have been doing in this area as well as updating our visitors on the non-academic or contextual factors are taken into account to create a fair and equal admissions policy for applicants.

“This is true of those who are coming through traditional routes or alternative pathways and we have a range of activities that we can deliver in schools and colleges or on campus to those who wish to engage in higher education. Ultimately, we want people to know as much as possible about the wide array of opportunities on offer here and what makes Dundee the best student experience in Scotland.”

The latest Times Higher Education (THE) Student Experience Survey placed Dundee top in Scotland and joint 4th in the UK. Dundee was rated first in the UK for good accommodation, centralised/convenient facilities and cheap shop/bar/amenities, and second for good students’ union. It scored in the UK top ten in another eight of the 21 categories.

The THE survey, now in its ninth year, is unique in that in looks beyond the usual definition of the student experience – comprised largely of teaching, learning, assessment and feedback – to a broader definition, one created by students themselves that includes those aspects of university life that matter most to them.

Dundee topped the survey in 2012 and has been consistently ranked in the top ten in the UK.
