Dundee students scoop prestigious scholarships

Five University of Dundee students will each undertake month-long study tours in Florence after winning John Kinross Scholarships worth £2500 from the Royal Scottish Academy.
Uist Corrigan, Abigail Dryburgh, Anna Hughes and Ellis O’Connor are all fourth year Fine Art students at Duncan of Jordanstone College Art and Design (DJCAD), while Benjamin Whitney is studying on the postgraduate MFA Art & Humanities programme operated jointly between DJCAD and the University’s School of Humanities.
Half of this year’s John Kinross Scholars are Dundee students. They will travel to Italy later this year and are expected to produce a substantial body of work as evidence of study. Subject to the satisfactory completion of the scholarship, selected works will be donated to the RSA collection upon their return.
Acting Dean of DJCAD Jeanette Paul said the award were a source of great pride for the institution, “The John Kinross Scholarship is a very prestigious award for emerging artists and the latest five recipients from DJCAD will have the opportunity to work in one of the most inspiring cities in the world and further develop their practice.
“I’m sure the work they produce will be a credit to DJCAD and, indeed, the School of Humanities with whom we offer the innovative Masters programme that Benjamin is undertaking. Meanwhile Uist, Abigail, Anna and Ellis will be exhibiting at our Degree Show, which opens next week.”
The John Kinross Memorial Fund was established in 1982 by Mr JB Kinross in memory of his father, John Kinross, a renowned architect who was greatly influenced by the beautiful Italian city which has been an inspiration to generations of artists and architects.
The scholarship is intended to provide young fine artists and architects in Scotland with the opportunity to live and study in Florence. The RSA also arranges a galleries and museums pass for the students allowing them free access to the city's artistic and historical treasures. Study visits to Tuscany and Umbria will also take place.
The DJCAD Degree Show 2014 will be open to the public from Saturday, 17th May until Sunday, May 25th. Admission is free and the exhibition is open from 10am until 8pm (Monday – Friday) and 10am to 4pm (Saturday – Sunday).
