'Dundee - the resilient city' - Engage Dundee lecture on Thursday, 30th January

The resilience of Dundee in the face of post-industrial realities and what this means for the future will be explored at a public lecture next week.

Dr Deepak Gopinath, a lecturer in Town & Regional Planning at the University of Dundee, will look at the concept of resilience before discussing this in the context of contemporary Dundee at the Dalhousie Building on Thursday, 30th January.

It comes at a time when the city is undergoing its biggest construction project for a generation - the £1billion Waterfront regeneration - and attempts to grow and attract new industries that will form the basis of Dundee's prosperity in years to come.

'Resilience is a concept gaining currency rapidly, with many arguing that it might potentially replace sustainability as the dominant discourse shaping our cities,' said Dr Gopinath.

'But given its increased usage in wider contexts such as engineering, ecology, city planning etc, it is rather hard to pin down what the concept means when someone talks about resilience. Considering what resilience means in addressing challenges facing our cities such as climate change, a lack of employment opportunities, and the shadow cast by the economic situation of the past few years is also challenging.'

The talk takes place as part of the Engage Dundee Evening Lecture series. Organised to showcase the work of academics within the University's College of Arts & Social Sciences, lectures are part of a wider Engage Dundee initiative by CASS to disseminate knowledge locally and globally in order to make a positive difference to the social and cultural wellbeing of society.

'Dundee - the Resilient City' takes place in the University's Dalhousie Building at 5.30pm on Thursday, 30th January.

The lecture is free and will be followed by a drinks reception. Places can be reserved by calling 01382 381184 or visiting http://tiny.cc/engagedundee.

This lecture is also one of the events organised to celebrate the 50th anniversary of planning education at Dundee.
