DJCAD graduates to exhibit at New Contemporaries 2014

Fifteen graduate artists from the University of Dundee will exhibit their work at this year's New Contemporaries show at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.

Now in its sixth year New Contemporaries is regarded as the most prestigious showcase for young artists in Scotland and the 2014 exhibition will take place at the RSA Galleries on The Mound from Saturday, 15th February to Wednesday, 12th March.

With over £25,000 worth of monetary prizes in addition to residency, studio and purchase prizes, the show provides a 'first exhibition' opportunity for Scottish creative talent each year. Presenting work across a wide range of media, the carefully curated exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see the best of Scotland's emerging talent under one roof.

Art graduates have been chosen by exhibition convenor Alan Robb RSA with assistance from fellow academicians and representatives from the five main colleges of art. Fifteen of the 57 exhibiting artists graduated last year from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD), part of the University.

They are: Sam Baxter, Morgan Cahn, Calum & Fraser Brownlee, Dorian Bruan & Jack Paton, Jonathan Douglas, Flo Gordon, Pawel Grzyb, Gabriele Jogelaite, Jonny Lyons, Ewan McClure, Dan Shay, Ross Weryk, Matthew Wilson.

Convener Alan Robb said the graduates have been given the opportunity to launch their career by exhibiting a substantial body of new work including painting, sculpture, film making, photography, printmaking, architecture and installation.

'In 2013 the overall quality of Degree Shows was impressive, continuing evidence of the high standards maintained by our art schools and colleges,' he said. 'This exhibition will be a marvellous art feast with lots of thought provoking ideas, images and objects. Visitors cannot fail to be impressed by the visual intelligence of the artists we have selected, the dazzling variety and resolution of individual works.'

The presentation of the first ever Fleming-Wyfold Bursary, sponsored by the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation, will take place at 2014 RSA New Contemporaries. Chosen from the exhibition presentations, the winner will receive a bursary of £10,000 plus an additional £4000 towards project production costs.

A critical aspect of this award is a mentoring scheme that will see curator Susanna Beaumont work with the winning artist for a year, offering guidance and support on the best use of the award to further their career.

New Contemporaries reflects the RSA's commitment to supporting and presenting the best contemporary work in Scotland. The RSA team works closely with the artists and architects towards developing a lasting relationship in the lead up to the exhibition and beyond.

Works will be for sale and the exhibition offers patrons the opportunity to invest in Scotland's up and coming talent.

New Contemporaries will be open at the RSA, The Mound, Edinburgh, from 15th February to 12th March. Admission costs £4/£2.
