Conference seeks resolution to archives issue

The University of Dundee will this weekend host a conference looking at the future of the post-1878 archives of the Scottish Catholic Church.

The symposium will take place at the University’s Tower Building from 10.30am-3.30pm on Saturday, 17th May and will be led by History Lecturer Dr Annie Tindley.

Historians have complained that difficulty in accessing the post-1878 Scottish Catholic Archives, currently held in Columba House, is hampering their research. Furthermore, the Church’s Bishop's Conference is considering further dividing the archives, causing concern amongst the research community.

Dr Tindley said, “We will have speakers discussing the impact the new arrangements are having on their research, and hope to generate a productive and positive discussion between all interested parties, including historians, archivists, the Church hierarchy and what next steps might be taken.

“The Scottish History Society is sponsoring the event for researchers, students, archivists and those interested in all aspects of Scottish History, to discuss the impact of the on-going uncertainty and their hopes for a future of the archives which supports all priorities.”
